Trip details
Wreck fishing in the Gulf of Mexico can be one of the most productive day fishing trips in Key West with 200 plus known shipwrecks, easily accessible from our docks. There are several shallow water or near-shore shipwreck sites, which provide a completely different fishing experience from the offshore or deeper water shipwrecks in the Atlantic. These shallow wrecks offer the light tackle angler many options in presentation. Commonly we produce explosive strikes at or near the surface by casting live baitfish or lures to visible cruising fish. Fly fishers can cast artificial flies with success as well. Barracuda, Jack Crevalle, Cobia and Permit are but a few of the many species calling the Gulf shipwrecks home. 1 2 3 4 5 6 The most productive Gulf wreck sites although being in much shallower waters on average than the Atlantic wrecks can be well offshore with 15 to 35 mile runs by anglers being common. The “Gulf wrecks” are renowned Permit and Cobia spawning grounds. Bull sharks are plentiful, even Tiger sharks are occasionally encountered. In the Gulf, a mixed bag of species caught by days end is routine making for an exciting fishing experience. Gray or Mangrove snapper, Lane and Mutton Snapper, Gag, Red and Black Groupers are just a few in and around the wrecks. During Kingfish (King Mackerel) season, monster Kings up to 60lbs. frequent the edges of the wrecks as do Spanish and Cero Mackerel.
What's included
- We provide absolutely everything for our guests with respect to fishing gear. However, we understand many anglers prefer to fish with their personal gear and we welcome you to bring it along. - Complimentary bottled waters and ice in our coolers
What to bring
- Sun protective clothing, sunscreen, a hat, etc - You are welcome to bring anything to eat or drink onboard with the exception of hard liquor. Our warm tropical sun, motion of the water and hard liquor just don’t blend well! Beer however is like plasma in Key West… you must have it!
Please note: **Fuel price included** Please Note: One especially important requirement to fish the Gulf Wrecks, past 9 miles from shore, is your guide needs to have the proper Federal fishing permits… More than 95% of the light tackle guides out of Key West DO NOT have these permits, as there was a moratorium on issuing any new permits, established in 2006, that severely limited the number of boats that can legally fish Federal waters. If you book with one of these guides, two things will happen, you will either fish closer in state waters, that everyone fishes, or you will illegally fish Federal waters. Our light tackle guides possess these permits, and can therefore take you to the best wrecks.
